The probable basis for this probably unique natural phenomenon arose about 17 Million years ago. At that time a tropical sea was covering the area where Korneuburg is presently located, in Lower Austria. The municipality of Stetten today lies where a large river flowed into the sea which was surrounded by a mangrove forest. The conditions were ideal for a flora and fauna which we would not expect to find today. These conditions and some natural disasters like a gigantic tsunami were fundamental prerequisites for the beginning of our unique oyster reef. |
